Are you interested in racing BCBR but not quite ready to compete this year? Here's your chance to see the event from the inside this year and get psyched to race it next year!
Are you coming along as Moral Support for a friend or family member competing in the race? Why not turn your road trip into an adventure with a difference? Volunteer with us and create your own chapter in the BCBR storybook. What a great way to get the insider's view of your friend/family member's incredible adventure...page by page!
YES! We need dedicated people to help make this logistically challenging event a success!
Our team of volunteers will be exceptional - they will undoubtedly demonstrate as much or more teamwork, problem solving skills, dedication, and perseverance to accomplish a common goal as the racers. Like the racers, volunteers may have to struggle through harsh weather conditions, rugged terrain and long hours. And like the racers, volunteers will push themselves to the limit for the adventure and camaraderie of it.
Volunteering for an event is an excellent way to meet other like-minded people and gain valuable skills and experience that can help meet occupational objectives. All BC Bike Race volunteers receive a catered evening meal, camping, an official race T-shirt, and the opportunity to win some cool draw prizes.
Are you up for the challenge? Check out just a few of the volunteer opportunities we've listed below. If you see something that interests you, fill out our online Volunteer form. Be sure to highlight your area of expertise and/or the volunteer opportunities that interest you.
The Base Camp Team will be a group of people who love challenges, make quick decisions, work hard in a variety of tasks and - most importantly - have fun doing it!
Some of the many different Base Camp tasks and roles include:
Tent City Team - Love the big-city excitement but long for the small-town feel? Recreate both every day by helping to set up and tear down the tents for the racers and volunteers and transport the tents to the next Base Camp.
Start/Finish Line - Are you inspired by a great beginning and moved by a memorable ending? Get your fix by helping to set up and tear down the Start/Finish Line and transport it to the next location.
Grounds - Got a green thumb? Maybe you’re a closet Mr/Mrs Clean? Put those great skills to use by helping to ensure that the land we are using is cleaner when we leave than when we get there.
Baggage Check and Bike Storage - Is your label-maker on the fritz from overuse? Do your friends accuse you of being overly organized? This is a call to all organized people who thrive on the challenge of keeping track of the racers’ gear. We need to make sure that racers get their bikes and gear bags when they need them.
The Base Camp crew will pitch in on all of these tasks as a team. Simply put, we will work hard and have fun! Our job is to make the racers’ off-bike experience the best in the world!
Doctors: We require one medical doctor for each of the seven days of BC Bike Race, or one doctor that can volunteer for the entire race. As the officical BCBR medical doctor, you would not need to be on site each day; instead, you could be on call via cell phone during race time for "medical control" (e.g. for qualified paramedics to start an IV if necessary). This role is best suited for an Emergency doctor, but will also suit a GP...provided that you are comfortable with making decisions over phone.
Nurses: Each day we will have 2 Aid Stations set up on course and will require one Registered Nurse at each. RNs are invited to volunteer on a daily basis, or for part or all of the race. Nursing students are also welcome!
Paramedics: We will require 3 to 6 paramedics each day...whether you're an EMR, PCP, or ACP...are all welcome. Due to the nature of this event, it would be a great befefit if you are fit and have a sense of adventure!
First Aiders: We are happy to hear from eager individuals with 80 hour wilderness first aid, EMR or OFA Level 3 training.
General Qualifications for All Medical Team Volunteers: If you are interested in volunteering for the BC Bike Race Medical Team, you will require good quality, terrain-appropriate footwear (i.e. hiking boots) as we will be stationed in the Backcountry. Also, due to the Backcountry setting, and the multi-day-long stage race concept, you should be able to lift a stretcher, consider yourself fit, love the outdoors, and love to sit in the outdoors all day (no matter what the weather!). Though not a requirement, it would be a great bonus if you have any or all of the following: radio communication skills, helicopter landing zone preparation experience, and wilderness stretcher carrying skill/experience.
The two daily Aid Stations provide racers with much needed food, water and supplies. For each Stage of the race, our team of 4 volunteers will work in pairs to set up on-course Aid Stations.
The Aid Station Team will also be responsible for rider counts (making sure we have everyone), communicating with First Aid and Base Camp, and cheering on the riders! Each day at Base Camp we will evaluate supply levels and restock for the next day.
With an emphasis on encouraging and entertaining riders, you must be able to wake up in a tent with a smile…so some personality would be a definite asset!
